In South Etobicoke you will find New Toronto, located along Toronto's western beaches. Known as a working class town due to its large industrial base, the area has been in transition for several years.  The history dates back to the 1890's when it was planned as a working town and in 1906 the Grand Turnk Railway opened a roundhouse, repair shop and freight yard.

The railway attracted industry and the area grew quickly. The largest employer was the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company which established a plant here in 1917.

In 1920 New Toronto was incorporated as a Town and due to its strong industrial base New Toronto was able to maintain one of the lowest residential tax rates in the Toronto area through much of its history. In 1967, New Toronto was amalgamated with the former Township of Etobicoke.

Today, much of the local industry has moved out of the area in favor of new homes and  developments attracting more professionals to the area.
